Earnings Attainment of Chinese Americans: A Multilevel Analysis

Bibin Qin

Studying 2000 census data on Chinese Americans in 70 metropolitan areas, Qin hypothesizes that both personal and structural characteristics operate to affect the earnings of individuals in the labor market. Results show that while education and labor market experience play increasingly important roles in the economic upward mobility of Chinese during their assimilation process, English facility indicates a decaying effect. The results support both the human capital and assimilation perspectives. Further, Qin finds that native-born Chinese suffer from occupational segregation from majority whites; only foreign-born Chinese with U.S. citizenship benefit from a higher representation of Chinese-owned businesses. This suggests that structural effects on earnings vary by immigration status.
